Objective To investigate health literacy status of occupational population in Pudong New Area.
Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1 200 employees in 3 companies from June to August 2011.
Results The occupational population identified as having health literacy accounted for 14.17%, and the employees with basic health knowledge and concepts, healthy lifestyle and behaviors, and health skills accounted for 19.58%, 20.82% and 27.45% respectively. The proportions of having knowledge of scientific concept of health, safety and first aid, infectious disease prevention, basic medical care, and chronic disease prevention were 43.77%, 41.10%, 23.53%, 13.47%, and 7.01% respectively.
Conclusion The occupational population in this study shows a generally high level of health literacy, but is weak in some aspects. Targeted health education and regular health literacy monitoring are proposed for further actions.
