Objective To realize real-time monitoring of the transportation of biological samples with the help of modern technology, and to strengthen laboratory biosafety management and prevent possible accidents for public safety.
Methods Through the integration of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Global Position System (GPS), Geographic Information System (GIS), General Packer Radio Service (GPRS) and temperature control, an intelligent biological sample transport monitoring system was established.
Results With the help of RFID tag technology, the system can archive each biological sample's information in cluding source, content, quantity, specifications, transportation purpose, and transportation temperature conditions. GPS and GIS techniques were adopted to perform real-time tracking and monitoring, providing effective guarantee to management and transportation. After actual trials, desired effects were achieved.
Conclusion The monitoring system conforms to the national requirements of laboratory biosafety management. It is the first practice in China and of practical prospect.
