Pattern and Impact Factors of Workplace Violence towards Nurses in Tertiary General Hospitals

  • Objective To explore the pattern and impact factors of workplace violence (WPV) towards nurses in tertiary general hospitals in a selected city.

Methods Questionnaires were completed by participants to examine prevalence and influence of WPV against nurses as well as attitudes and preventive measures taken by the employers.

Results During the past one year, 63.0% nurses investigated suffered from WPV. Working departments, strong support, putting a premium on nurse, encouraging WPV reporting, routine security patrolling, and fixed seats in waiting rooms were the leading impact factors of WPV.

Conclusion Nurses' experience of WPV is a prevalent phenomenon in tertiary general hospitals in the city investigated. It is urgent for hospital administration to raise attention to WPV and reduce the related risk.
