  • [Objective] To understand the communication barriers between people living with HIV/AIDS(PHA) and health professionals in AIDS prevention and treatment, and to assess the effect of intervention programs.

[Methods] Baseline data were collected from 50 PHA and 46 relevant personnel (policy makers, service providers, non-governmental organizations and patients' families) using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. N-Vivo 8.0 software was used for coding and data analysis. Case simulations and role-playing were taken in the intervention, the intervention effect was assessed by questionnaire and the data was analyzed by SPSS 11.5.

[Results] The baseline findings showed that the main obstacles for PHA in the health care services were the poor accessibility to health care services, PHA mental health problems and occupational exposures. The intervention program achieved the goal of improving doctor-patient communication.

[Conclusion] The interaction intervention is an effective communication method, through which the goal of eliminating the communication barriers between PHA and health professionals was achieved. It is also a good example for other communication trainings.
