Methods The data of 41 drinking water samples during 2011 were retrieved randomly from the water quality monitoring system in selected urban and rural water treatment plants. The data were evaluated using drinking water quality index (DWQI) and five-color classification method.
Results Of all selected samples, 29.73% were graded as excellent (green), 21.62% were good (blue), 10.81% were poor (yellow), 35.14% were worse (red), and 2.70% were worst (black). Higher water quality was found in the samples from urban water treatment plants, followed by town and village water treatment plants.
Conclusion The drinking water quality in Shengzhou was not satisfied. Related supervision and management should be enhanced by administrative agencies. The water quality index and five-color classification methods reflect water quality directly, which is convenient for water quality information disclosure and public participation.
