Abstract:
Objective To measure calcaneal bone mineral density (CBMD) among middle and old aged residents in Zhanjiang communities, and to analyze its correlation with age, body surface area (BSA) and body mass index (BMI).
Methods CBMD of 449 residents in middle and old ages were measured with CBMD quantitative ultrasonic device, and their heights and weights were measured also.
Results The CBMD were decreased with aging. The prevalence of osteoporosis in males (37.0%) was lower than in females (47.6%). CBMD was negatively correlated with age, height and weight, but positively correlated with BSA.
Conclusion More osteoporosis cases are found in middle and old aged females in Zhanjiang. Age, height, weight and BSA are the main factors of CBMD declination among this population.
