Abstract:
Objective To describe the status of commercial sexual service in entertainment venues, to investigate the living conditions and sexual behaviors among female entertainment workers (FEWs), and to provide scientific evidence for establishing intervention strategies.
Methods By cluster sampling method, a face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted among 125 FEWs in 4 large and 18 small entertainment places in Baoshan District of Shanghai, whose blood and urine samples were collected for laboratory testing. Statistic analysis of available questionnaires were performed with Micro Access 2003 and SPSS 13.0.
Results The average age was (28.00& #177;7.17) years, ranging from 18 to 44 years. The median working time was 13 months, ranging from 1 to 144 months. The median income was 70 Yuan for each sex. During menstruation, 2.4% of the FEWs were still working, and 12.8% of them had vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse. There was a high error rate in some specific problems of condom using. The differences of condom using between FEWs having sexual behaviors with regular sexual partners and clients in last time and last three times were statistically significant. The number of FEWs with one or more sexually transmitted diseases (STD) was 16, accounting for 12.8%.
Conclusion The health status among FEWs is not good. The number and continuity of correctly using condoms should be improved.
