Toxic Effect of Traffic Pollution on Reproductive System of Male Mice

Abstract: Objective To investigate the toxic effect of traffic pollution on the reproductive system of male mice.

Methods Thirty Kunming male mice were randomly divided into three groups (heavily polluted, lightly polluted, and blank control,10 in each group),and exposed to different traffic flows respectively for continuously 10 h every day. After exposed for 35 d,development of genital organs, sperm density and abnormality, pathological changes of testis and epididymis, and DNA damage in testicular cells were detected and analyzed.

Results Compared with the blank control group, there were statistical differences in body weight, testis weight, epididymal weight, weight coefficient of testis, and DNA damage rate in testicular cells of the heavily polluted group (P<0.05);the sperm density was significantly higher and the abnormal sperm rate was significantly lower in both polluted groups (P<0.05).The histopathological results showed different levels of testicular damage in both the polluted groups.

Conclusion Traffic pollution may damage male mice's reproductive system.
