Secondhand smoke exposure among urban residents aged 15 years and above in Wuhan

Abstract: Objective To investigate secondhand smoke exposure among urban residents in Wuhan and provide a scientific basis for tobacco control work and legislation.

Methods Probability proportionate to size sampling method was used to select 2 500 residents aged 15 years and above covering the urban regions in Wuhan as the study subjects. A total of 2 163 residents completed a face-to-face investigation, with a response rate of 86.52%. The survey results were weighted by the data from China's Sixth National Census in 2010.

Results There were 52.99% (n=942) and 40.07% (n=2 135) of the respondents reported exposure to secondhand smoke in indoor workplaces and homes in last 30 days respectively. The exposure rates of males in indoor workplaces and homes (61.26% and 44.63%) were higher than those of females (43.38% and 35.41%) (P < 0.0.5). According to the survey, the secondhand smoke exposure rate was highest in bars or nightclubs (96.40%, n=47), followed by restaurants (73.34%, n=1 376), and lowest in public transport vehicles (12.19%, n=1 671).

Conclusion A high level of secondhand smoke exposure is found among urban residents in various places in Wuhan, especially in commercial places such as bars or nightclubs and restaurants.
