Association of Occupational Stress with Serum Dopamine and Norepinephrine in Nurses

Abstract: Objective To explore the effects of occupational stress on serum levels of dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) among nurses.

Methods Occupational Stress Indicator Model was used among 230 nurses. The levels of DA and NE in serum samples were measured.

Results The NE levels varied among the selected nurses of different ages, seniorities, and education levels (P < 0.05).The DA levels varied among those of different seniorities and education levels (P < 0.01).The results of stepwise regression analysis showed that decision control, job monotonousness, daily tension were the predictors of serum NE level (R2=0.130,P < 0.01);job prospect and daily tension were the predictors of serum DA level,to which job prospect was negatively correlated (P < 0.01) and daily tension was positively correlated (P < 0.01).

Conclusion Occupational stress may affect the levels of dopamine and norepine phrinein the serum of nurses.Higher occupational stress may contribute to the elevated levels of dopamine and norepinephrinegroup
