AIDS High Risk Sexual Behavior and its Sociological Factors among MSM in Pudong New Area of Shanghai

  • Objective To explore AIDS high risk behavior and its associated sociological factors among men who sex with men (MSM), and to provide suggestion for the intervention against AIDS.

    Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with snowball and internet sampling in Pudong New Area. A total of 158 MSM were interviewed face to face, whose demographic characteristics, sexual orientations, sexual behaviors and sexual histories were collected after informed consent was obtained.

    Results There were 130 (28.3%) gays and 28 (17.7%) bisexuals in 158 MSM. In the past 6 months, 97 (61.4%) of them had fixed male sexual partners, 80 (50.6%) had multiple sexual partners and 82 (51.9%) had occasional sexual partners. In addition, 46 (48.4%) who had fixed male partners, 31 (38.8%) who had multiple sexual partners, and 33 (40.2%) who had occasional sexual partners had AIDS high risk sexual behaviors in the past 6 months. Single and low-income MSM were more inclined to have high risk sexual behaviors than others.

    Conclusion The rate of AIDS high risk sexual behaviors is high and keeping multiple sexual partners is common in MSM. It is urgent to conduct intervention programs among them.
