Objective To evaluate the tobacco smoking and control situation among residents in Shanghai after promulgated Shanghai Public Places Smoking Control Law,and to provide basis for future tobacco control strategies.
Methods A face to face investigation on knowledge,attitude and behavior towards tobacco smoking was conducted among 1 925 permanent residents aged 15 years and older enrolled from all the 18 Shanghai districts between November 2010 and January 2011.
Results Among the residents interviewed,the smoking rate,current smoking rate,regular smoking rate,and heavy smoking rate were 28.3%,22.5%,19.6%,and 8.5%,respectively.Quit smoking rate and successful quit rate were 20.4% and 11.7% among the smoking residents.In the current smoking residents 21.2% tried to quit smoking and only 8.5% of them in the past year tried to do so.Passive smoking rate was relatively high among the non-smoking residents (43.5%) and increased to 48.9% at indoor public places.Restaurants and bars were always two indoor public spots with high smoking rates (60.9% and 40.0%).The tobacco control information was covered in various media channels,especially on TV (66.1%) and newspaper/magazine (52.8%).
Conclusion The tobacco control information network has been set up in Shanghai.However,the smoking rate is still at a relatively high level despite a slight drop.Both the passive smoking rate and the situation of smoking ban in public areas remain unchanged.
