A Survey on Environmental Quality of Railway Dangerous Goods Stations

  • Objective To investigate the quality of air, soil, and surface water at dangerous goods stations of Shanghai Railway Bureau.

Methods Shanghai Nanxiang station (Taopu station) and Wuxi station (Nanmen freight yard) were selected as study sites.On-site monitoring and sampling of air, soil, and surface water were carried out for laboratory analysis and quality assessment.

Results At Nanxiang station (Taopu station),the ambient air PM10 concentration was beyond the Level 2 limit as prescribed in Ambient Air Quality Standard (GB 3059-1996);the concentrations of lead, arsenic, and mercury exceeded the Level 3 limit in Environmental Quality Standard for Soils (GB 15618-1995).At Wuxi station (Nanmen freight yard),the monitoring index of petroleum and total phosphorus did not meet the Class IV standard provided in Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water (GB 3838-2002).

Conclusion The railway dangerous goods stations investigated are threatened by some environmental pollution to various extents. Therefore, strengthened monitoring and proper control measures should be adopted.
