AIDS/STD Intervention Measures and Effect Evaluation among Female Entertainment Workers in Minhang District of Shanghai

  • Objective To assess the effectiveness of an AIDS/STD intervention and explore effective intervention measures among female entertainment workers (FEWs).

    Methods A total of 125 FEWs were recruited from 28 commercial entertainment venues (such as the KTV, pub, hotel, beauty care salon, barbershop, massage parlor, foot health care parlor and Spa, etc.) which were selected by a stratified random sampling strategy in Jiangchuan and Zhuanqiao communities of Minhang District. An integrated in tervention were applied to the selected FEWs through DVD education and promotion of condom use skills. Interviews were also performed (group and individual). Follow-up investigations were carried out three months and six months after the intervention and the effectiveness was assessed.

    Results Significant differences (P<0.05) were revealed in six parts including HIV knowledge and self-behaviors of participants with the extension of the intervention and the continuing intervention activities. There were in creases in the proportion of those who gained higher marks in condom use skills and condom accessibility quiz. The proportions of those who used condoms in the last three sexual activities and in the recent one month sexual activities were increased gradually.

    Conclusion The key index has been improved among FEWs through the intervention which has been proved applicable and effective towards AIDS prevention among them.
