Effect of CYP11B2 gene polymorphism on susceptibility to essential hypertension in steel workers exposed to high temperature

  • Background The onset of essental hypertension (EH) is determined by a combinaton of genetc and environmental factors. Among the genetc factors, CYP11B2 gene-344T/C polymorphism is frequently studied. High temperature as an occupatonal risk factor and the polymorphism may have an interacton effect on EH.

Objectve This study investgates the effect of the interacton between CYP11B2 gene-344T/C polymorphism and high temperature exposure on the susceptbility of steel workers to EH.

Methods A case-control study was conducted among 793 male workers in an iron and steel enterprises, including 284 EH patents and 509 controls. An occupatonal epidemiological survey was conducted and venous blood samples were collected. High temperature and noise exposure in workplace were detected. CYP11B2 gene-344T/C polymorphism was detected by polymerase chain reacton-restricton fragment length polymorphism analysis. Multple logistc regression and fork analysis were used to analyze the additve and multplying effects of CYP11B2 gene-344T/C polymorphism and high temperature operaton on the susceptbility of male steel workers to EH.

Results In the allelic analysis, the risk of developing EH in C allele carriers was 1.39 tmes that in T allele carriers (95%CI:1.09-1.77). The multple logistc regression results showed that the risk of developing EH in workers with high temperature operaton was 1.43 tmes that in workers without (95%CI:1.03-2.00), and the risk in workers carrying CC genotype was 2.48 tmes that in workers carrying TT genotype (95%CI:1.38-4.47). High temperature and CYP11B2 gene-344T/C polymorphism did not show additve interacton (U=-0.258, P>0.05) or multplicaton interacton (CC genotype OR=2.77, 95%CI:0.97-7.88) for EH.

Conclusion The CC genotype of CYP11B2 gene-344T/C polymorphism is associated with elevated EH susceptibility. No additive or multplicaton interacton between its gene polymorphism and high temperature operaton is found.
