Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether-47 Concentrations in Human Milk:A Meta-Analysis

  • Objective Polybrominated diphenyl ether-47(PBDE-47) is detected abundantly in human milk. Its long halflife compared to most of other congeners makes it remaining in the food chain for a long time. The aim of this meta-analysis is to summarize results and related factors on the concentrations data of PBDE-47 in human milk.

Methods A computer search was carried out for literature pertaining to the concentrations of PBDE-47 up to October 2014.We searched all available electronic papers by certain keywords in Pubmed,China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI),and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM) databases.Proper literatures were included in this study according to the inclusion criteria.Statistical analysis was performed using Stata 11.0 software.

Results A total of 25 studies in 24 articles were included in this meta-analysis.The meta-analysis revealed the average PBDE-47 concentration was 12.847(95%CI=2.422-23.272) ng/g lipid.Data were assessed using the random-effects model (I 2=99.8%,P=0.25).In the subgroup analysis, the concentrations were 1.388(95%CI=0.850-1.926) ng/g lipid for studies in primipara, which was higher than those of the multipara 0.708(95%CI=0.394-1.023) ng/g lipid. In the subgroup analysis of maternal age,the average PBDE-47 concentration was 0.441(95%CI=0.174-0.709) ng/g lipid for maternal age < 28 years, which was lower than those of 28-31 years1.679(95%CI=0.968-2.389) ng/g lipid, and the average PBDE-47concentration was 1.152(95%CI=0.393-1.911) ng/g lipid for maternal age > 31.

Conclusion This study demonstrates the exposure of pregnant women to PBDE-47 would lead to the presence of PBDE-47 in human milk and its concentration is varied by maternal age and parity.
