Respiratory system impairments induced by volatile organic compounds: An epidemiological review

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a large class of organic compounds, are common air pollutants in workplace and indoor and outdoor environment. VOCs enter human body mainly through respiratory tract and accumulate in respiratory system, causing respiratory system damage directly. Previous studies show that VOCs exposure was associated with a variety of respiratory system lesions to varied extents, including lung function decline, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. This review summarized published population-based epidemiological studies about the association between VOCs and respiratory system impairments, aiming to provide new insights for further research in this area.
