The Journal of Environmental &Occupational Medicine (JEOM,http://jeom.scdc.sh.cn:8081),formerly “Labour Medicine”, was started in 1984 and is now published byShanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) inconjunction with Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, under the guidance ofShanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission. The JEOM is a monthlypublication which publishes professional literatures mainly in Chinese withEnglish abstracts and is distributed both domestically (CN 31-1879/R) andinternationally (ISSN 2095-9982).
The editorial board is formed by22 international and 81 native editors, 16 senior consultants, and more than400 reviewers, covering famous experts at home and abroad in environmentalmedicine, occupational medicine, as well as various fields of public health.The JEOM’s editor-in-chief is Professor WU Fan, Director of Shanghai CDC,Director of Shanghai Institutes of Preventive Medicine, a renowned expert inepidemiology. Besides, she has served as a tutor of postgraduate candidates ofShanghai JiaoTong University; an adjunct and visiting professor of VanderbiltUniversity; a vise committee director of Health Information Standards Committeeof National Health and Family Planning Commission; a vise chairman andsecretary general of Shanghai Preventive Medicine; a partnership editor ofEnvironmental Health Perspectives (EHP) international program.
Today, transformation in medicalpatterns allows the health of occupational populations affected not only byoccupational environment, but also by their living and social environment. Theincreasingly obvious health threats posed by multiple factors have necessitatedstudies integrating environmental medicine, occupational medicine, and otherdisciplines. As an information carrier, a journal is obliged to correspond todiscipline integration. The JEOM focuses on studies that combine environmentaland occupational medicine, as well as on the health of the public (especiallyoccupational populations). Paying special attention to achievements infront-line of research at home and to the successful experience in the studiesgained internationally is what JEOM aims at for the advancement ofenvironmental and occupational medicine science and improvement of people’shealth, which is also regarded as one of JEOM’s responsibilities. Currently,the JEOM is the only academic periodical in China that is devoted to theintegration of occupational and environmental medicine science, whereas severalothers focus on either of the two fields. Therefore, the JEOM has played animportant role in promoting the communication of study results, cooperation,and development in environmental and occupational medicine, as well as infacilitating the cross-disciplinary development of environmental medicine andoccupational medicine.
The types of articles includeCommentaries, Original Articles, Research, Experiments, Methodologies, Reviews,Communications, etc. Articles published are mainly contributions from home andabroad, as well as soliciting contributions; besides, famous experts at homeand abroad write commentaries, communications, and other articles at times.Since 2012, the JEOM has established a partnership with EHP and publishestranslated EHP articles to further enhance academic exchange. All contributionspublished are peer-reviewed by 2-3 experts. And there is a standing editorialboard responsible for the final check-and-approval of the proof copy. Thepublication is edited according to international standards. A table of contentsin English is provided in each copy. For Original Articles, in addition toEnglish abstracts, figures and tables are expressed both in Chinese and inEnglish. The JEOM is currently among the leading publications in the field ofenvironmental medicine and occupational medicine in China, both the qualitiesof its articles and editing or printing work. Readers of the JEOM includeleaders from health and environmental administration departments, professorsand students of medical colleges and universities (especially schools of publichealth), and researchers in the field of public health, environment, food,agriculture, meteorology, etc.

Since 2002, the JEOM has successfully held 6 internationalacademic conferences on the theme of “environmental and occupational medicine”.The recent decade has witness the conference developing from a regionalacademic exchange platform to a high-level event gathering public healthexperts from all over the world, addressing hot spot issues with regard toenvironmental & occupational medicine, human health, and socialdevelopment, and discussing the possible role of public health in promoting aharmonious human-environment relationship. The proceedings of the third tofifth international conferences are covered by Conference Proceedings CitationIndex-Science (CPCI-S). It provides the latest research progress onenvironmental and occupational medicine to conference participants. Given this,the JEOM international conferences have significant reference and guidancevalue for effectively accelerate the development of environmental andoccupational medicine.
