Progress on toxicity and mechanisms of persistent organic pollutants

  • Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a sort of substances with high toxicity, biological accumulation, lipophilicity, and semivolatility.A large number of studies have shown that POPs can result in adverse health effects, and the mechanisms are not clear yet. This paper introduced the toxic effects and related mechanisms of such typical POPs as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans and polychlorinated biphenyls on nervous, reproductive, endocrine, and other systems or organs, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for further mechanism research.
